Lead & Serve Reaches $156 Million Through Collective Commitment
In just five months, Lead & Serve: The Campaign for University School has grown from $130 million in leadership commitments at the October campaign launch to more than $156 million—a reflection of the community’s shared belief in the school’s mission, remarkable generosity, and commitment to the future of University School.
For campaign chair Marc Byrnes ’72, P’02, ’03, ’05, the milestone is less about the number and more about what it represents. “There is a culture here of showing up for the school,” he said. “Alumni, parents, and grandparents are giving in ways that are thoughtful, generous, and grounded in real appreciation for all the school accomplishes for our boys.”
That spirit is especially visible among current parents according to Whitney Johnson P’29, ’30, ’31, who co-chairs the parent effort with her husband, JW, and with Dani and Michael Weiner ’99, P’35. She describes a groundswell of engagement. “Families are stepping forward because they see the difference the school is making in the lives of their sons,” she said. “The generosity we’re witnessing reflects both gratitude and a desire to ensure that well-rounded and life-enhancing experiences continue for future students.” To date, parents have contributed more than $24 million to the effort.
As the campaign continues through June 2028, donors will have the flexibility to structure commitments over time. Planned giving is also playing an important role. Board Director Neil Waxman P’06, ’10, co-chairing that effort with Dave Fulton ’74, P’01, ’03, ’07, emphasized the long-term perspective many supporters are taking. “These commitments are about ensuring a strong future for the school,” he said. “They allow community members to align their personal planning with their belief in the school’s enduring value.”
Donors cite the strength of the leadership and the school’s positive momentum as important factors in their decision to support US at high levels. Marc concluded that, “The campaign’s early success underscores a simple truth: when a community shares a clear sense of purpose, meaningful commitment and support follows.”
